Where limestone fits best
Limestone has a soft, uniform look that suits both traditional and modern rooms. Because it is easier to shape than granite, it is the stone we reach for when a project needs carved profiles, thick mantel shelves, hearths, window surrounds or exterior trim.
We carry limestone in a range of sizes and colors alongside our granite, and fabricate it in our own shop on Sloan Hwy. Our crew installs it, so the same people who cut the stone are the ones who set it.
Limestone in the kitchen?
It can be done, but it is not the easy choice. Limestone is softer and more porous than granite, so lemon juice, wine and vinegar can etch the surface and it needs sealing. For a busy kitchen most people are happier with granite or quartz, and use limestone on the fireplace, a bar back or a feature wall instead.
Indoor and outdoor work
Beyond fireplaces, we cut limestone for paving, wall cladding, entrances, window surrounds and corner accents on homes and commercial buildings across Mid-Michigan. Send us drawings or photos and we will talk through sizes, thickness and finish.

- Is limestone good for a fireplace surround?
- Yes. Limestone handles the radiant heat of a fireplace surround well and is easy to shape into hearths and mantels, which is why it is a long-standing choice for fireplaces.
- Does limestone stain?
- It can. Limestone is more porous than granite, so seal it and wipe up spills, especially anything acidic. Clean it with warm water and a pH-neutral stone soap.
- Can limestone be used outside in Michigan?
- Many limestones are used outdoors for cladding, trim and paving. Freeze and thaw cycles matter, so tell us where the stone is going and we will help pick a suitable one.
